Winter Texans

We have made the commitment (subject to change, of course) to spend the winter at the Palm Shadows RV Resort in Donna, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley about 10 miles from the Mexican border. So, instead of "wandering" across the country as we did all summer, we have become "Winter Texans". It is so nice to be a "Winter Texan" rather than a "Snowbird" as we were referred to in Arizona and Florida. The locals in this area really make us feel welcome.

Last night, we drove out into the community looking for a place to have a nice dinner. A couple of miles away, we stumbled onto an out-of-the-way restaurant called "Pancho's". We were ready for "Mexican", so we decided to take a chance. I think we were the only non-Spanish speaking people in the place. The menu was in semi-Spanish and we had some difficulty communicating with the waiter . . . but with a few hand gestures, we managed.

It was a fairly large restaurant, with bold Mexican architecture and decor! The waiters were dressed as matadors and a 12-15 piece live Mexican band was playing loudly including 4 or 5 trumpets. We were seated, had chips & salsa, a great enchilada dinner, three margaritas, soaked up the ambiance and music . . . and the bill was only $22.

It was so Mexican, I asked Carole if we had mistakenly crossed the border. What a great experience and when we left, one of the owner/managers came running out of the restaurant calling to us. He gave me his business card and said they really enjoyed having us there and when we returned, to ask for him personally and he would see that we had special service and special prices.

It's nice to be a "Winter Texan"!
