Learning the Moves

Carole expressed an interest in "learning the moves" to play chess. So I brought out the chess set which had belonged to Carole's son, Michael, and was given to us by her granddaughter, Melissa. We don't know where Michael acquired this chess set, but it is a beautiful set which appears to have come from Egypt. The pieces are all designed to resemble people and objects from the days of the Pharaoh.

The king resembles a Pharaoh, the bishops look like a cobra snake, the knights are lions, the rooks appear to be an Egyptian castle, and the pawns look like the Pharoah's army. Each piece is exquisitly decorated in very fine detail including the eyes. Most pieces are adorned in jewels finished in fine detail. A beautiful set indeed!


It was a very nice day with lots of sun, little breeze, and temperature in the 80's, so we set up the chess set on the patio where I went through a full description on the objective of the game, the pieces, and how each moves. Carole caught on easily and we played three practice games. That seemed to be enough for the first day of "learning the moves", but we'll pick up where we left off on another day.
